Kayak Deluxe

What kayak (model or even type) would be best suited for a long river tour?
I want to take a long term (2 week) solo trip down the Guadalupe river. From Hunt Texas to Austin. I plan to take all gear with me and eat mostly military MREs. The river doesn’t have too many rapids but it definitely has some exceptionally shallow parts and some snaking and winding turns. I’ve tried this trip before in a Pelican Castaway Deluxe and it worked well but didn’t survive the trip. Even being careful the shallow bits ate through the hull only halfway though. Of course money is always a factor and value is important. This is not a question over SHOULD I attempt this trip again, or HOW to attempt this trip; only in what vessel this community recommends. Thank you.
Not surprised your Pelican self-destructed – they are notoriously cheesy kayaks, thinly molded and prone to seam blowouts, cracking, leaks and sinking. They are marketed through discount stores for people who are just planning to drift in a pond and fish, not ambitious trips like you are taking. I’d suggest trolling Craigslist for decent brand used rotomold yak, either a 12′ to 16′ touring model or a 10′ to 12′ old-style whitewater or creeking boat (though tracking will be an issue with the latter and it won’t have the storage capacity). Stick with brands like Perception. Dagger and Wilderness Systems. I wouldn’t recommend a skeg (too vulnerable in low clearance water) and only a rudder if it can be flipped up. I picked up a 16′ Dagger Magellan which is a great river touring boat, for $400 a couple years ago on Craigslist. The classifieds on http://www.paddling.net have a lot of used boats too and you can search the ads by state for local availability.
Here’s one ad I just found on the Austin CL:

Excellent price and a good tought touring boat if it fits you (you don’t mention your height and weight so i can’t be more specific.) I noticed several kayaks listed that might work for you.
If you can spare a little more cost, you might look into Pakboats folding canoes and kayaks (aircraft aluminum frames and PVC/nylon hulls). They’ve got their 18 pound (that’s right. 18 pounds) Puffin Sport yak with a removeable deck on sale right now for around $750. Tough little boats — the National Park service uses them for backcountry travel and I know a guy who has paddled hundreds of gravelly miles in Alaska with them. And they fold up into a duffel bag. We have one of their larger kayaks, the XT-15 and it’s easy to set up, a breeze to pack gear into and paddles really well. Plus, at the end of your trip you can dismantle it and take it back home on a bus.
Have fun — sounds like a great trip. We’re hoping for rain up here in central PA tomorrow so our planned trip on a Susquehanna River feeder won’t be a bottom scraper.
