Nisssan Tohatsu Outboard 15 HP and 18 HP?
I am thinking about buying a Nissan 15 HP outboard for trout trolling. I notice that a 18 HP costs only about $150 more and weighs the same. Anybody have a Nissan/Tohatsu that can tell me if it runs, starts and trolls well and if they would buy the 15 or 18? I noticed that the Nissan costs less than a Mecury, Yamaha or Honda.

The difference between the 15 hp verse the 18 hp; the carb is larger. The power heads for Nissan/Tohatsu and Mercury are all manufactured by the same company. Yamaha no longer manufactures the Mercury powerheads. If you look at current production Merc’s you’ll find they’ve gone to MM (european) hardware instead of SAE. You’ll also notice the majority of parts will swap between brands. Also, the Hondas are way overated for the cost. Yamaha makes a great powerhead and very sturdy lower unit. The down side to the Nissan is if you need warranty work accomplised. There really aren’t that many shops around to do it. A mercury shop will not likely have a Nissan warranty repair because Merc won’t allow the competition. Customers would soon discover the Nissan is a LOT cheaper for virtually the same thing. So for warranty work you need a Nissan Warranty shop. Once the warranty is up, take it to any Merc repair shop and if they know what they’re doing they can keep you running no problem. Oh, and have fun trying to get the viable shop manuals for a Nissan. Needle in a haystack if you aren’t a warranty repair station.
